Mmhh, I like the configure-stuff, due to the fact that almost every
popular software uses .configure-make-make install. So most (maybe
advanced?) users like me most times unpack an package and use the commands
above without having a look at any readme. I don't like install-scripts,
because they are like a kind of "property" solution, ./configure-stuff
is more common. But these are just my 2 cents...

That is a *good* idea. Maybe based uppon a database, so that everybody
can submit entries by himself (like the Application-Database of the
Wine-project: http://appdb.codeweavers.com/).

So we can get a lot of tested data. I think it is not possible to test all
the collected data by one person, so in my opinion a "user-databse"
would be the best solution.

Freshmeat or sourceforge? Well, I only know sourceforge. There are a lot
of advantages: bugtracking-system, support-forums, very fast servers...

If you like, I can set up an account at adsl4linux.de for the
pctel-project. We can offer ssh, anon-ftp, mysql, php, perl, python,
shtml, majordomo, eMail-Accounts, ... Maybe usefull, I don't know which
features sourceforge or freshmeat can offer.

But unfortunately, we are not allowed to host files greater than
1 MB (in fact files greater than 1 MB are limited to 5 GB transfer
volume). So we cannot host the tar-ball (maybe you can use sf to host
this file), or is the tranfer volume generated by the pctel-tar-ball
smaller than 5 GB? Well, drop me an eMail if you need an account and
don't want to use freshmeat/sf.

Bye,
Michael
